AI Is Only as Good as the Human Using It

A weathered hand grips the polished wooden spoke of a ship's helm at sea — the human setting the course.

A recent notification on my phone’s lock screen: “Dinner music praised; expressions of love and admiration shared; pride conveyed.”

(Thanks, Siri. Really nailed that sentiment.)

Ugh! We live in a world of constant dehumanizing AI influence. We all feel it. But judging by the constant slop on LinkedIn and everywhere else, it still needs saying:

AI IS ONLY AS GOOD AS THE HUMAN USING IT.

I’ve been heads down for a while, pivoting my business and digging in deep with AI. Just a few of the ways AI changed the game for me:

  • I used it to build my new website using a far better tech stack than I could have built on my own.
  • I used it to dramatically speed up research into a fraud investigation for a client.
  • I used it to iterate on itself, building self-reflective improvements in Conductor that help my AI improve with every session.
  • I used it to build a specialized tutor to help a client study for a licensing exam (they passed!).
  • I’m currently using it to build a SaaS product for mental health professionals (launching soon!).

My go-to AI system runs well now. That means I spend less (though still not zero) time correcting and guiding it, and much more time getting good results.

My AI output is good because I’m good at AI.

That is the mentality we all need to own, and the mentality I’m helping my clients build. Good AI use is not a set-and-forget. It’s not about finding the best one-off prompt (are you tired of the “100 best prompts” clickbait yet?). And it’s certainly not about blithely replacing humans with cheaper AI agents.

Good AI use means understanding AI’s limitations, using it as a partner (not an authority), guiding it as much as it guides you, and most of all retaining the human critical thinking that is essential to good AI output.

That’s what “Good AI” means today, and the future “Good AI” world we need to build.
